EUROPEAN CITIZENS
Inspired by the free movement of persons foreseen in the Treaties, the term “European Citizenship” was mentioned for the first time as an objective in the Treaty of the European Union (Article 2), that came into force in 1993.
The European citizenship is characterised by its rights, obligations and politic participation of the citizenships. The objective is to try to make citizens identify with the European Union and to develop a public opinion, a politic consciousness and a European identity.
Who is a European citizen?
Any person with the nationality of a Member State of the EU. Up to the present, EU citizenship does not impose duties to European citizens and this is a fundamental difference with citizenship within Member States. European citizenship is complementary to national citizenship, that is to say, it does not replace national citizenship. |
